At Buttercross Counselling, I believe in providing a safe and supportive environment for my clients. My approach is relational and tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring that you feel heard and valued.
I have over 15 years of experience both within private practice and the NHS. I work with autistic adults and adults with adhd or audhd who are exploring identity after a late diagnosis. Many of my clients come to therapy to navigate issues like masking, burnout, anxiety, and building authentic relationships. I offer both online sessions and in-person therapy from my base in the Hebrides.
I belong to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their ethical guidelines.
I'm based in Tong, just outside Stornoway and I offer face-to-face or online individual counselling and psychotherapy for adults.
Please reach me at buttercrosscounselling@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Counselling is a type of talking therapy where I provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, ultimately supporting you to better understand yourself and others, and to develop coping mechanisms for dealing with challenges. It's a collaborative process focused on identifying goals and potential solutions to emotional problems, enhancing communication and coping skills, and promoting positive behavior change.
I offer both short- and long-term therapy, depending on your needs. I usually meet with clients on a weekly basis at a time that suits you. The first full session is spent on assessment where we talk through the reasons you have sought therapy and what your aims are. From that we can agree on a suitable timescale and what your counselling plan may involve.
I started working for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust in 2007 following employment in the probation service where I supported people wanting to address their substance misuse issues as well as facilitating groups for hard to reach clients.
In 2010 I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a MA in Integrative Psychotherapy and joined the BACP.
Since then I moved to NHS Highland and worked for a community mental health team where I delivered one-to-one care and support.
Over the last 10 years I have been focusing on my private practice and have completed further in-depth training on trauma, and neurodivergence.
I am a relational therapist which means that I utilise a variety of theoretical concepts and practical techniques to develop a way of working that suits you. I believe that you are the expert of your life and my role is to enable you to reach your full potential. My work is trauma-informed and I also use neurodiverse-friendly tools to suit your individual needs.
I have experience in person centred approaches, cbt, attachment, as well as ensuring my practice includes a social justice basis.
I have had training in delivering both and can offer email therapy too, if you'd prefer.
In terms of effectiveness, research has shown that online counselling is as beneficial as seeing someone in person. I use Zoom for online sessions but am open to other platforms if that is your preference.
Please consider booking a free consultation to discuss how I can support you.
