Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at buttercrosscounselling@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Many people I work with come to therapy feeling unsure after previous experiences where they felt misunderstood, judged, rushed, or as though they had to fit into a particular way of 'doing therapy'. Some have been given advice when what they really needed was to feel heard. Others have felt pressured to open up before they felt safe, or have come away feeling that their neurodivergence, trauma history, or emotional experiences were not fully understood.
I believe therapy works best when there is a genuine sense of safety, trust, and collaboration. My approach is warm, relational, and tailored to you as an individual. There is no expectation to 'perform' in therapy or to arrive knowing exactly what to say. We can work at a pace that feels manageable for you, making space for curiosity, honesty, humour, uncertainty, and the parts of yourself that may not often feel welcome elsewhere.
Whether you are completely new to therapy or returning after a difficult previous experience, I aim to create a space where you can feel respected, understood, and able to show up as yourself.

I am a fully qualified psychotherapist and counsellor with an advanced degree in integrative psychotherapy.  I have also had extensive further training and experience working with individuals in areas including specialist trauma work, neurodivergence, relationship and sex therapy, as well as ensuring I am focussed on an anti-oppressive GSRD stance.

I am certified in Somatic Trauma Healing, EMDR, Attachment Trauma Treatment, CPTSD treatment, Neurodivergent Clients and Eating, and Neuroaffirming Practice

My fees are £65 per 50 minute session for individuals, £80 per 60 minute session for couples/relationships and I offer concessions for people living locally or on a low income. This reflects the level of training, experience and continuing professional development I am committed to.

I have been practicing since 2010 and specialise in working with neurodivergent adults or relationships and with clients who have had difficult or unhelpful experiences in previous therapy.

My approach is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and relationship-focused. I place particular emphasis on pacing, safety, and collaborative working — especially for clients who may feel wary, misunderstood, or unsure about returning to therapy.

I work with a small, contained caseload to ensure consistency and depth of care. Over the last twelv emonths, 95% of my clients have successfully completed their therapy, and I have a strong record of sustained engagement and retention.

My fee reflects:

over 16 years of post-qualification experience

specialist expertise in neurodiversity and therapeutic repair

the depth and consistency of work offered

ongoing professional development and clinical supervision

Therapy is an investment of time, emotional energy, and trust. My aim is to offer work that is thoughtful, effective, and respectful of that investment.

Starting therapy with someone you don't know can be a little scary and intimidating.

This is one of the reasons I offer a free 20 minute session as a way to get a feel for me and how I work as well as ask any other questions you may have. We can do this in-person or online regardless of how you'd like to continue working (if you decide to) in the future.

Our first full session is an information gathering one and can be a little more structured than our following ones simply because I need to know a bit about your history and experience. There is never any expectation on you to answer anything you aren't comfortable talking about, trust takes time to develop and it's important we go at your pace.

If we meet in-person,  you can sit, stand, curl up on the sofa, look out of the window (eye contact isn't required!), use the loo, play with fidget toys (I have a good selection available), bring a drink, have some water, just talk or sit in silence. It's about whatever you feel most safe with.

For online clients I usually use Zoom but I also offer sessions via WhatsApp and am open to whatever platform you feel confident with. Again, as long as you are in a safe and confidential location, you are free to move about, lie down or talk with the camera off if that's easier.

Therapy is about your experience and our relationship and part of my responsibility is to meet you where you are at. Please let me know of any accommodation you need and I'll see what I can do.
